Abstract

Management Information Systems (MIS) are critical for enhancing decision-making, operational efficiency, and overall performance in commercial banks. In Kenya, challenges related to data quality, integration, and security can limit MIS effectiveness. This study examined the influence of user input and customization, resource availability, MIS system security, and ICT organization on the performance of MIS in Nairobi’s tier-1 commercial banks. The research was grounded in the DeLone and McLean Information Systems (IS) Success Model, Technology Acceptance Model, Dynamic Capabilities Theory, and Institutional Theory. A descriptive research design was adopted, targeting 15 leading commercial banks in Nairobi. From each bank, three key personnel—including department heads, IT directors, CIOs, IT managers, and MIS specialists—were selected, yielding a total sample of 45 respondents. Primary data were collected via structured questionnaires and analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The findings revealed that user satisfaction, system customization, adequate resources, robust MIS security, and strong ICT infrastructure significantly enhance MIS performance. Banks with well-established IT departments exhibited higher MIS effectiveness compared to others. The study concludes that investing in IT capabilities, security, and user-centered customization is critical for maximizing MIS performance in Kenyan commercial banks. Recommendations include continuous staff training, periodic system upgrades, and strengthening ICT governance frameworks to ensure sustainable and efficient MIS operations.
